Netlify vs Vercel
Netlify has HTML form detection and a shared credit pool. Vercel has a Next.js preset and longer default function limits, but Hobby is personal use only.

Short answer
Pick Netlify if you want automatic HTML form detection, background functions that run up to 15 minutes, or automatic framework detection for Astro, Remix, SvelteKit, or Vite.
Pick Vercel if you are deploying a Next.js application or need synchronous functions up to 300 seconds, and your project is personal, since the Hobby plan is limited to non-commercial use.
Neither platform wins on every count. The right choice depends on licensing, framework, and how you handle backend tasks.
Free plan model and resource limits
Both Netlify and Vercel offer free tiers, but their accounting structures differ.
According to the official Netlify Pricing page, Netlify uses a credit model. Free accounts receive 300 credits per month. This pool covers production deploys, compute, form submissions, bandwidth, and web requests. Production deploys consume 15 credits each, bandwidth costs 20 credits per gigabyte, compute costs 10 credits per GB-hour, and web requests cost 2 credits per 10,000 requests. When a site reaches its monthly usage limit, it enters a paused state until the start of the next billing cycle. Netlify notifies you at 50%, 75%, and 100% of usage.
In contrast, Vercel uses fixed metric quotas. As outlined in the Vercel Hobby documentation, the Hobby tier includes 100 GB of Fast Data Transfer and 1,000,000 function invocations per month. When a usage limit is exceeded, that feature stays unavailable for up to 30 days, and some limits have shorter pause periods.
On commercial use, the Vercel Hobby documentation states that the Hobby plan is for non-commercial, personal use only. The Netlify Pricing page does not state a commercial-use restriction for its free plan, and it does not state that commercial use is permitted either, so check Netlify's terms before hosting a client site there.
Compute runtimes and function timeouts
Serverless execution limits differ by function type. Under the Netlify Functions configuration reference, the limits are:
- Synchronous functions: 60 seconds.
- Scheduled functions: 30 seconds.
- Background functions: 15 minutes.
Background functions suit long-running asynchronous work such as batch jobs and slow third-party calls, but they need a separate way for the client to learn the result.
Per the Vercel Hobby documentation, the maximum duration of a Vercel Function is 300 seconds (5 minutes) on Hobby. Pro defaults to 300 seconds, configurable up to 800 seconds, with an extended maximum of 1800 seconds in beta. If your endpoints need more than 60 seconds of synchronous execution, the Vercel limit gives more headroom on the free tier.
Framework support and deploy preview workflows
Both platforms connect to Git and build frameworks automatically, with different emphasis.
As detailed in the Netlify Frameworks documentation, Netlify provides automatic detection and default build settings for Astro, Next.js, Nuxt, SvelteKit, Vite, and Remix through the Frameworks API. Deploy previews are created for pull and merge requests according to Netlify Deploy Previews, which covers GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, and Azure DevOps.
On Vercel, the Vercel Frameworks page lists Next.js among its supported frameworks and describes the Build Output API, a file-system specification for producing a Vercel deployment that framework authors can target. Per the Vercel docs, connecting GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket deploys on every push with a preview URL for every branch.
Routing, forms, and custom domains
Frontend projects rely on redirects, form capture, and custom domain setup.
For URL management, Netlify Redirects uses a _redirects file in the publish directory or structured rules in netlify.toml. Netlify supports status codes, splat matching, rewrite proxies, and country and language conditions. On Vercel, Vercel Redirects describes redirects in vercel.json or framework config, middleware for dynamic redirects that update without redeploying, and bulk redirects from CSV, JSON, or JSONL files.
For forms, the Netlify Forms setup page describes automatic form detection for HTML forms, with submissions, notifications, and spam filters managed in Netlify. The official Vercel docs do not state a built-in form submission backend, so forms on Vercel are handled with your own code or a third-party service.
For custom domains and security, the Netlify HTTPS guide describes free HTTPS on all sites, with automatic certificate creation and renewal through Let's Encrypt, plus custom certificate support. The Vercel SSL guide states that Vercel uses Let's Encrypt, the HTTP-01 challenge for non-wildcard domains, and the DNS-01 challenge for wildcard domains, which requires Vercel nameservers.
Seats and commercial terms
Collaboration limits and licensing differ across the free tiers.
According to Netlify Pricing, the free plan includes 1 member, and Git contributors on public repositories are free and unlimited. Teams that need more members use paid plans.
Under the Vercel Hobby plan page, team collaboration features and role-based access are listed under Pro, not Hobby, and the Hobby plan is limited to non-commercial, personal use.
How to decide for your project
When choosing between Netlify and Vercel, check three things:
- Commercial intent: If the site is a paid client or business project, the Vercel Hobby terms rule out its free tier. Check Netlify's terms, since its pricing page does not state a commercial-use rule for the free plan. If the project is strictly personal or educational, both free tiers are an option.
- Framework selection: If your codebase uses Next.js, Vercel's framework preset is the direct fit. If it uses Astro, Remix, SvelteKit, or Vite, Netlify detects and configures those frameworks automatically.
- Backend complexity: If your app needs simple forms without a backend, Netlify's automatic form detection covers it. If it needs synchronous API calls longer than 60 seconds, Vercel's 300-second Hobby limit provides more runway, and Netlify's 15-minute background functions cover asynchronous jobs.
Choose Netlify if
- You need built-in HTML form detection without provisioning external backend services or APIs
- You need background functions that run asynchronously for up to 15 minutes
- You deploy Astro, Remix, SvelteKit, or Vite sites and want automatic framework detection
Choose Vercel if
- You are deploying a Next.js application and want its framework preset on Vercel
- Your serverless API endpoints require up to 300 seconds of synchronous execution time
- You prefer fixed per-metric quotas rather than one shared credit pool
Limits of this comparison
- Netlify free-plan sites enter a paused state when monthly credits are used up, until the next billing cycle
- Vercel Hobby is restricted to non-commercial, personal use, so commercial sites need a paid plan
