Render
Cloud platform for hosting web services, static sites, background workers, and managed databases from Git.
What it is
Render is a cloud hosting platform that offers a fully managed alternative to traditional hyperscalers. Rather than assembling virtual machines, load balancers, and container orchestration clusters by hand, engineers configure services through a dashboard or a YAML Blueprint file. The platform supports native runtimes for major languages as well as custom Docker deployments, and it automatically builds and runs applications when code is pushed to Git.
When it fits
Render suits full-stack applications that have outgrown pure serverless hosting. When an application needs persistent background processing, long-running WebSocket connections, scheduled cron tasks, or managed datastores, Render handles these workloads in one environment. Development teams benefit from automated preview environments, custom domains with automated TLS certificates, and managed PostgreSQL databases without the operational overhead of server maintenance.
What to watch
Builders should know the free plan constraints. Free tier web services enter an idle spin-down state after 15 minutes without inbound traffic, introducing a noticeable delay when spinning back up upon subsequent requests. Free instances also share a monthly cap of 750 instance hours per workspace and use an ephemeral disk, so local file uploads or SQLite files are lost on redeploy or spin-down. Paid services can attach a persistent disk, which free web services cannot do.
