Firebase
Google backend platform providing managed NoSQL databases, authentication, file storage, and serverless hosting.
What it is
Firebase is a managed backend-as-a-service platform maintained by Google. It offers managed primitives such as Cloud Firestore for NoSQL document storage, Firebase Authentication for user identity, Cloud Storage for media assets, and Firebase Hosting for web content. Developers can build applications without provisioning standalone API servers for these services.
When it fits
Firebase suits mobile-first apps, rapid prototypes, and client-heavy interactive platforms that benefit from real-time data sync. As the Firebase documentation describes, Firestore supports real-time listeners and offline support for mobile and web. Teams already on Google Cloud or using BigQuery for analytics can keep their data in the same ecosystem.
What to watch
Review platform boundaries and tier structures on the Firebase pricing page before you commit. On the free Spark tier, usage limits are enforced daily rather than monthly, so a sudden traffic spike can use up a quota until it refreshes at midnight. Trial instances that are not upgraded to the Blaze plan are archived at the end of the trial and deleted 90 days later. Blaze plan fees are based on usage volume, so heavy read and write volume adds cost.
