What it is
Supabase is an open-source backend-as-a-service that gives developers an application stack built around PostgreSQL. Supabase provides a Postgres database for each project and wraps it with application services: authentication, file storage, auto-generated REST APIs, and Edge Functions.
When it fits
Supabase suits projects that need relational data modeling, standard SQL tooling, and granular access controls. According to Supabase documentation, developers can enforce authorization rules directly in SQL using PostgreSQL Row Level Security (RLS) policies. This setup allows frontend clients built with frameworks such as Next.js to interact with the database without writing boilerplate CRUD backend servers. Realtime subscriptions also suit collaborative boards, chat apps, and live dashboards.
